Young People Warned About Social Electroning Footprint

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has issued a stark warning to young people using social networking sites.

The warning issued by the ICO is in response to concerns that millions of those who use social networking sites are posting too many private details about themselves on the internet.

The ICO predicts that over 50% of young people who use social networking sites are making their details available online.

The ICO plans to educate young people about the dangers of placing too much information online by warning them that any info provided to social networking sites leaves an “electronic footprint” which could be traceable in the future.

David Smith, ICO Deputuy Commissioner commented:

“Many young people are posting content online without thinking about the electronic footprint they leave behind.

“The cost to a person’s future can be very high if something undesirable is found by the increasing number of education institutions and employers using the internet as a tool to vet potential students or employees.”

Facebook has recently allowed access to its members’ profiles to be indexed by search engines including Google, Yahoo and MSN, raising concerns and protest among privacy advocate groups.
