Yahoo! to Release Fireeagle for Geotargetting Information

Yahoo! announced that it will launch a service for obtaining geo-location information.  This will be released towards the end of November according to Yahoo.

The new service,  codenamed “Fireeagle”, will allow individuals to store geo-location information and make it available to other web applications.

Sources close to Yahoo say that the service will allow software developers to use the geo location information including postcode, latitude and longitude and/or city name in building application for social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace.

GPS users will also have the option to set their device to periodically update Fireeagle with their geographical information.

To secure privacy, Yahoo has enabled the service with an option to turn off tracking and also delete any personal information stored on the system should they wish to do so.

Fireeagle will be rolled out in Beta later this month.
