Viacom CEO Criticises YouTube Copyright Protection Efforts
Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman critisised the new copyright protection system for YouTube claiming is not satisfactory.
The system which was announced recently by Google is still in beta mode and dubbed YouTube Video Identification. Accroding to Google, it’s designed to help copyright holders control the distribution of their content over the internet.
Google’s new copyright protection system allows copyright holders such as Viacom and Time Warner to upload the original complete copy of their content to YouTube which in turn recognises it as copyrighted content and protects it by matching it against other uploads to the YouTube database.
Mr Dauman commented: “What no one wants is a proprietary system that benefits one company.” He added that YouTube and Viacom had discussed having a copyright filter in place last year, but it had not yet materialised. He continued…”I don’t think we’re quite there. I’ve been hearing about this coming on board for quite some time,”.
Viacom has been embrolied in a copyright infringement lawsuit against Google since early this year accusing YouTube of disregarding intellectual property.
