MSNBC Aquires Newsvine

In March 2006, Fox purchased NewRoo.com.  Condé Nast gobbled Reddit in October 2006, the trend continues with msnbc’s decision to acquire the social news site, Newsvine.com.   The detailes of the deal were undisclosed.

Msnbc.com, a joint venture between MSN and NBC claims 26 million unique users, and is ranked fourth in Nielsen-NetRating’s Top American News Sites for July 2007.  The purchase of Newsvine.com will add to the appeal of MSNBC for young users as well as older news readers who have over the years gravitaed towards social news sites.

Newsvine was launched in March 2006.  The model behind this popular social news site  is simple, it carries news stories and opinions written and professional as well as amateur publisghers from around the world.  Newsvine user are also provided with their own blogs for writing articles as well as the ability to comment, vote on other users’ articles.

According to Newsvine, the social news site will continue to operate independently and completely seperate from the msnbc brand.

msnbc’s acquisition of Newsvine reinforces the strategic importance of user-generated content and its effects on all industries including news.   More importantly,  this strategic acquisition by msnbc allows it to compete with the likes of Yahoo! and Google News, AOL News and CNN news.
