Yahoo to Acquire Zimbra
Yahoo! announced that it will acquire email and collaboration software provider Zimbra in a deal worth around $350 million.
Zimbra produces a range of products including email, calendar and AJAX-based web collaboration applications.
Yahoo! said the purchase will allow it to benefit from Zimbra’s ISP partnerships and bolster its service offering to universities and small businesses by allowing them to use their domain to host email services.
Brad Garlinghouse, senior VP of communications and communities at Yahoo!, commented:
“With Zimbra, we will bring the security, reliability and anywhere access of Yahoo! Mail to people at school, work and home, further enhancing our leadership position in webmail.”
The Zimbra deal enforces Yahoo’s commitment to bolstering its email services. A few weeks ago, Yahoo! imoroved the speed and performance of its email offering and now allowes users to send free text messages to mobile phones and instant messages to users of Yahoo! Messenger as well as Windows Live Messenger from their accounts.
