YouTube to pay Royalities to Artists

YouTube logoYoutTube reached a licensing agreement with the MCPS-PRS Alliance,  a body responsible for the collection of royalties for musical artists in the UK.

The MCPS-PRS Alliance represents 50,000 musical performers, composers and publishers.

The agreement between Google-owned YouTube and the alliance will see millions of musical pieces licensed to YouTube in the UK.

MCPS-PRS Alliance’s managing director Andrew Shaw said that the deal with YouTube is  different from other broadcaster deals as YouTube is not fully aware about its user-uploaded content.  Shaw added, that YouTube has arranged to explore and implement technology to search for music on the site.

Shaw said:

“We do have an agreement from them to put in place various technologies that will allow them to identify music that is being used, to report that back and to make appropriate distribution payments.”

YouTube Lawsuits:

The latest lawsuit against YouTube was brought about by the US-based National Musical Publishers’ Association (NMPA) who’re claiming that songwriters are not being sufficiently compensated for their music on YouTube.

Other lawsuits against Google’s video sharing service include Comedy Central and Paramount Pictures.

Google took over YouTube in a $1.65 deal during October last year.
