UK Internet Access on the Rise
According to new research, the number of homes with Internet access in Britain is on the rise.
Official figures by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that homes with access to the internet has risen by almost a million over the last year to reach 15.2 million homes with access to the internet, thats equivelent to 61% of UK homes. Figures for the same period in 2006 suggest that only 54% of UK homes had access to the internet.
The percentage of people using broadband is also on the rise with 84% of UK households having a broadband connection versus 69% last year.
Figures showed that London and the South West of England had the highest percentage of internet connected households, with N. Ireland lagging behind at nine per cent fewer internet-connected households compared to the national average.
Figures also showed that internet usage was concentrated among the younger age groups versus the older age groups with 71 per cent of Britons over the age of 65 saying they never used the web, as opposed to just four per cent of those in the age group between 16 and 24.
The ONS confirmed:
“There was still a large difference between the number of young and older people accessing the internet.”
The figures also confirmed that online shopping is on the rise, with 53% of net users having bought goods online. This is an increase from last year’s 44%.
Last year, the Office of Communications stated that the “internet is now an essential component of modern life”.
